Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange $24.99

Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange

Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange

Synopsis

In the early 1570s, a scandal worthy of the court of Henry VIII set Europe’s noble courts ablaze with one of century’s most shocking marital debacles.  Anna of Saxony (1544-1577), wife of the Dutch prince and rebel leader William of Orange, had embarked on a torrid love affair with the father of one of the age’s greatest painters and was pregnant with her lover’s child.  The princess’ pregnancy and subsequent descent into madness signaled the end of a troubled royal marriage that had begun full of promise and with one of the most spectacular wedding celebrations of the age.

Since her early youth at the glittering court of Dresden, Anna had been known as a difficult child and troublemaker.  Servants complained about her violent outbursts, while courtiers bemoaned her general disregard for aristocratic female etiquette.  Upon reaching her teenage years, the princess’ guardians decided that Saxony’s enfant terrible should leave home as quickly as possible by marrying a foreign suitor in a preferably far-away land.  Enter William of Orange: handsome, charming, and heir to one of the Netherlands’ largest estates.  The fact that he was also a profligate partier and lover of women was conveniently overlooked.  Anna immediately fell for the Dutch bon vivant despite warnings from a few well-meaning relatives.  For one, William was a Catholic, while Anna adhered to the Protestant teachings of Martin Luther, critical voices cautioned, correctly predicting future trouble for the princess in the Catholic Netherlands.  Furthermore, the prince’s liege lord, the fanatical Philip II of Spain, very much disapproved of a match between his premier vassal and a “Lutheran heretic.”  There was also the issue of plain Anna’s growing obsession with the roguish William; an obsession that was not reciprocated.  In the end, the impetuous princess threw caution to the wind.  No other than William would do for a husband, she insisted, while publicly announcing that “every vein in my body heartily loves him.”

A Matter of Honor: Britain and the First World War

Zachary Twamley, the host of the popular, When Diplomacy Fails podcast explores the role “Honour” played in Britain’s entry into World War I.  The decision to enter the war in conjunction with France and Russia in 1914 was no a foregone conclusion.  There were pro’s and con’s within the government to enter the war – and the German invasion of Belgium was not the final push to get Britain to declare war on Germany.  Zach examines “Honor”, as was passed down from Victorian to Edwardian England as its role in the government’s final decision.  Based on his award winning paper and his podcast, Zach explores the one of the factors that led to Britain’s road to war.

Legacy of Shadow by Craig Gallant

Two men of earth stumble upon an artifact that bestows upon one of them control of and responsibility for an ancient space station that stands as the last bastion of freedom in the galaxy. He does his best, with the support of his friend and others he meets along the way, to fill the office until a suitable successor can be found, while the forces of galactic oppression move to use his presence as an excuse to crush the station. He battles determined enemies, betrayal, and his own inner demons to defend the position blind luck put him into, but in the process, he might have started a process that might destroy every human in the galaxy.

Craig is from Bedford New Hampshire where he does his best to warp space and time to fit far more activity into each day than anyone, including his wife, thinks would be advisable. During the day Craig teaches Theatre and Literature courses to the intrepid students of Milford High School. After hours Craig actively pursues kickboxing and mixed martial arts, and is one of the two hosts of the wildly mediocre and not-too-horrible general gaming podcast The D6 Generation. He is husband to a remarkably supportive wife and father to clearly the smartest, cutest, and most promising three year old on the planet (an entirely objective assessment). Craig plays games whenever he can find the time and the opponents, ranging from his recent favorite, a classic South American dice game called Perudo, to whatever the local tabletop war-game flavor of the month happens to be. And in all the voluminous free-time this schedule allows, Craig writes.

The Great Martian War: Invasion! (Paperback)

The Great Martian War: Invasion!, by Scott Washburn.   Having been beaten back from their initial foray in Britain at the turn of the century, Martian warships land in the American west.  Using limited technology, U.S. forces must fight the Martians with improvised technology.

The Great Martian War – Sample Chapter

From a reader:

I am always wary when it comes to books adapted from games, but since I love the game I thought I would take a chance. I was very pleasantly surprised. The book captures a slice of alternative history in an engaging and exciting manner. The author manages to run the gamut from large scale history all the way down to very personal stories in the Martin conflict. I really couldn’t stop reading and lost all track of time when I started the book. So that leaves me with only one real problem… the next one isn’t out yet. – Brian
