Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange $24.99

Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange

Anna of Saxony: The Scarlet Lady of Orange

Synopsis

In the early 1570s, a scandal worthy of the court of Henry VIII set Europe’s noble courts ablaze with one of century’s most shocking marital debacles.  Anna of Saxony (1544-1577), wife of the Dutch prince and rebel leader William of Orange, had embarked on a torrid love affair with the father of one of the age’s greatest painters and was pregnant with her lover’s child.  The princess’ pregnancy and subsequent descent into madness signaled the end of a troubled royal marriage that had begun full of promise and with one of the most spectacular wedding celebrations of the age.

Since her early youth at the glittering court of Dresden, Anna had been known as a difficult child and troublemaker.  Servants complained about her violent outbursts, while courtiers bemoaned her general disregard for aristocratic female etiquette.  Upon reaching her teenage years, the princess’ guardians decided that Saxony’s enfant terrible should leave home as quickly as possible by marrying a foreign suitor in a preferably far-away land.  Enter William of Orange: handsome, charming, and heir to one of the Netherlands’ largest estates.  The fact that he was also a profligate partier and lover of women was conveniently overlooked.  Anna immediately fell for the Dutch bon vivant despite warnings from a few well-meaning relatives.  For one, William was a Catholic, while Anna adhered to the Protestant teachings of Martin Luther, critical voices cautioned, correctly predicting future trouble for the princess in the Catholic Netherlands.  Furthermore, the prince’s liege lord, the fanatical Philip II of Spain, very much disapproved of a match between his premier vassal and a “Lutheran heretic.”  There was also the issue of plain Anna’s growing obsession with the roguish William; an obsession that was not reciprocated.  In the end, the impetuous princess threw caution to the wind.  No other than William would do for a husband, she insisted, while publicly announcing that “every vein in my body heartily loves him.”

Crossroads of the Revolution by William Kidder (HC)

From our friends at Knox Press, this is the history of Trenton during the American Revolution.

Exhaustively researched and beautifully written, this is the story of revolutionary Trenton, NJ, both a critical supply post and a crucial junction halfway between loyalist New York, and patriot Philadelphia.  Between 1774 and 1783, Trenton is a microcosm of the challenges faced by ordinary Americans during the revolution.  Struggles intensified by Trenton’s geographic location in the state which saw more military activity than others and on a road constantly used to move and supply armies.  Life in Trenton connected to just about every aspect of the revolution. This is the story of the people who lived in Trenton, or who spent time there because of the revolution, helps us better understand the hitherto untold importance of their town beyond the one well known day of battle.

Operations of the Polish Army During the 1809 Campaign by Roman Soltyk (Paperback)

Operations of the Polish Army During the 1809 Campaign by Roman Soltyk (Paperback)

Operations of the Polish Army in the 1809 Campaign

Originally published in 1841, Operations of the Polish Army during the 1809 Campaign, by General Roman Soltyk, is not a simple recitation of the events of the war; it is a reasoned critique of the operations of the Polish Army, disputing its territory and its liberties from the Austrian Army foot by foot.  It was written by a man who was personally familiar with the people and events discuss in this work.  Using original material along with his memoirs, General Soltyk lays out a fascinating and detailed account of the little researched, but equally important theater of war.

The Author

Roman Soltyk was the son of a Polish general who fought in the Russian Campaign of 1812 in the army of the Duchy of Warsaw, survived the wars and was an officer in the army of the Kingdom of Poland.  Soltyk joined underground patriotic organizations in the 1820’s and commanded troops in the November Insurrection of 1830-31.  He eventually emigrated to France where he wrote histories of the Napoleonic Wars and the November Uprising.

The War of the Pacific by Gabriele Esposito

The War of the Pacific by Gabriele Esposito

The Pacific War was one of the greatest and bloodiest war ever on the west part of South America, and is one of the most important conflicts in South American history. It is also known as the ‘Saltpeter War’ or the ‘Guano War’ because the possession of these two highly profitable nitrates was the main cause of the conflict.

By the 1870s Chilean military policies exploded into full scale conflict. This book examines the troops, uniforms and equipment used by the Chilean, Peruvian and Bolivian forces and traces the events of the war from the early naval blockades, through major pitched battles, to the final guerilla campaign in occupied Peru. The war ended in total victory for Chile, and that country’s military emergence thereafter as ‘the Prussia of South America’, while it cost Peru some lucrative provinces, and Bolivia its outlet to the Pacific coast.

Gabriel Raspe published a book in the 1780’s on the Polish-Lithuanian Army of 1775 illustrating the various units and detailing their organization. The army illustrated in this book existed between the First Partition of Poland and the one that fought against the Russians prior to the Second Partition. It provides a valuable link between the pre-partition Commonwealth Army and the troops that fought in defense of the Constitution of 1791.
